Breeder: Miyatora
Miyatora Koi Farm (宮寅養鯉場) is in Kawaguchi, Nagaoka, Niigata. The family goes back further than most — Shichizo Miya was a Kawaguchi farmer raising coloured carp in the late 1800s. Katsunori Miya runs it today, third generation, with his son Takumi. The farm worked as a koi broker for decades and only moved into production itself in 1990, which is part of why the name is better known inside Japan than outside it.
Miyatora's calling card is the Sensuke Kohaku line. Sakutaro Tsuna, a Kawaguchi breeder trading as Sensuke, produced it around 1960 and sold it only through Toraichi Miya; Miyatora raised the offspring and spread the line out of Kawaguchi. Sensuke-type Kohaku are thick through the body with snow-white skin — already heavy at the shoulder as nisai, and holding that white as they grow rather than yellowing with age.
Beyond Gosanke, the farm breeds Shusui, Kujaku, Beni Kikokuryu, Mukashi Ogon and Platinum Ogon, and has recently added Doitsu Showa. They work about 40 mud ponds with roughly 100 parent koi, aiming at fish that get large and live long.
Miyatora koi available now
Everything here was imported by House of Koi. We chose almost every older koi individually at the farm, and those are one-of-a-kind: each listing carries video of that exact fish with its size, sex and year born, and closes when that fish sells. Tosai are bought both ways: we pick many out of the pond ourselves, and others come as a mix we chose at the farm, in which case the listing covers a group of young koi rather than one named fish.
Our Miyatora selection sits almost entirely on the farm's non-Gosanke work — Kujaku, Mukashi Ogon, Platinum Ogon Short Body, Ginrin and Doitsu Shunrai, a Doitsu Kohaku/Shigure, a Kawari, and a Doitsu Showa group from the line they have most recently taken up. If you want a koi that does not look like everyone else's pond, this is the page to start on.
